Buddies

**We would like every child to bring a rock with a relatively flat surface to school next week. You can find one this weekend while you are taking a walk, or maybe you find one in your backyard. The rock should be no bigger than the size of an adult palm. Please have your child bring their rock in by Thursday next week.

We completed our first full week of grade one, hooray! We continue to learn our classroom routines and get to know our classmates. We have been practicing our reading skills. We have been working on reading the pictures and decode some words by using the pictures for clue. We call this skill "Eagle Eye". Please help me practice this at home.

We each have a grade 3 buddy! They are from Mr. Soulliere and Ms. Reilly's class. It was so exciting to meet them today. We read with our buddies today and got to know them. We will be connecting with them every week. Ask me to tell you my buddy's name if I can remember it.

In math we learned a new game called race to 100. Ask me to tell you about this game. I am practicing "subitizing" which means to recognize a number of dots at a glance. When I use a dice for this game, I am learning to quickly identify what number I rolled and then moving my playing piece on a 100's chart.

Our playground officially opened this week! In the mornings before school, only specific grades will be allowed to play on the playground. Please note that grade 1's are allowed on the playground from 8:10-8:25am on THURSDAYS. On the other days, grade 1's can play on the filed or compound.

Reminders:

- Next Thursday September 19 is an early dismissal day at 11:55am.
- Demographic forms need to be signed and returned.
- Book orders are due Tuesday September 17.
- A letter was sent home today with your child about helping us with our classroom alphabet. Please send us your alphabet artifact by September 27.
- Please do not send juice boxes to school. We have had several spills which causes sticky floors and lots of fruit flies. Thank you for your help with this.

We had a very exciting day full of surprises! This morning as we were learning our new poem about the gingerbread man, we discovered that our gingerbread people we made on Friday ran away!! They left us a note, and we went on a gingerbread man hunt around the school! Ask me where we had to look and where we finally found them! This afternoon we went up on stage and practiced our song for our concert this week! We are so excited to show you our Sugar Plum dance. This afternoon a package came for us! It was freezing cold and had snow on it! It came all the way from the North Pole! We opened it up and it was an Elf! We will learn what our Elf's name is tomorrow! Here is our new poem of the week and our new sight words: ran, ate, eat, he, no

Little Elf

It is the final week before the Winter Break. Wow! We have been counting the days and today is day 69. That means we have been in grade one for 69 days of learning, fun and growing.  This week, our new sight words are: who went what  but  so Our poem is: Our teachers are very proud of us and all the work we have been doing around our reading skills. We have been really good sight word detectives and finding them hidden in other words.  Please click on the poem above and ask me to find the sight words this wee: but, so, went. I am also using the strategy Eagle Eye (looking at pictures for clues) to decode words. Ask me to tell you which word says "Christmas Tree, Reindeer, Santa, Candy Cane." We enjoyed some Festive Singing in the gym today and are working on a story map for the story "The Gingerbread Man". Today we learned what the word characters mean. There are 7 characters in the story we listened to today. Ask me to tell yo
