Piet Mondrain, Primary Colors and Color Mixing

This week was all about leaves and color mixing! We connected to a famous artist named Piet Mondrian by learning more about him. We learned that he uses the primary colors which are blue, red and yellow, shapes, straight lines and that he liked to dance!

We noticed how he did his abstract art and made some of our own Piet Mondrian art.

We took a closer look at the primary colors and made colors of our own. We had so much fun mixing colors to find a color we liked and created a "paint pallette" with them. We even named our paintings. Here's a sneak peak! Can you guess which paint color is named "Peach, Fire Paint, Love Fire, Blue Toy, and Sunset Angel?"

We have been doing some graphing and surveys in grade one. We used our math carpet today to learn more about each other.

Do you like fall? Yes or No. Can you see what the most popular answer was?

What is your favorite fall leaf color? Brown, Orange, Purple, Green?

We read the book "I am Thankful for" by Todd Parr. We wrote in our journals today about what we were thankful for and why. Ask me to tell you what I wrote. We are learning to use our knowledge of letters and sounds to spell words. We call it "kid writing". We are learning to be able to read what we wrote and writing down the beginning and end sounds we hear.

What is perseverance?

Here is our first 5 words from our new sight word list! This week's words are: do all under on at This is our poem of the week: This week we are talking all about perseverance. Our poem says "I think I can"! This is a positive mindset that we are trying learn to say to ourselves even when things are hard. We listened to a story called "How to catch a star" which is about a boy who loved stars and wished he could catch his own. We counted that he tried at least 5 different ways to catch a star and did not give up until one of his ways worked! We brained stormed what perseverance is and made a list. Then, we drew pictures of a time that we thought something was hard but had to persevere to accomplish it. We drew before and after pictures of what it looks and feels like to persevere! Some of us drew about learning how to ride a bike, swim, skate, climb monkey bars, and play hockey. REMINDERS: We seem to have a fruit fly problem ...

Curriculum Term Letter

Each grade team has created a Curriculum Term Letter to communicate with families about the learning that their child will be doing from September to December. The term plan specifies curricular outcomes that the grade will be focusing their instruction and assessment around. It is our hope that this letter will begin to provide you with a clear picture of your child’s learning over the year. You can find your child’s Curriculum Term Letter on our school website under Classes & Departments and the Resources on the right hand side of the page.   For further information on the Alberta Program of Studies, please visit the Learn Alberta website: https://www.learnalberta.ca/content/mychildslearning/ Housekeeping: **Tomorrow (Wednesdays) is our library day.
