Happy December

Happy December! We have a short and busy month ahead of us with lots of fun celebrations, learning, singing and excitement.

Our new sight words this week are:

came
be
out
white
brown

Our new poem is:

This week we will be spending time in another grade 1 class with another grade one teacher each day! Each teacher has a special activity planned. Ask me to tell you which teacher I worked with today and what I did with them.

We continue to work on problem solving in math. We are learning to break apart numbers 1-20. Today we looked at a math problem with 12 monkeys. When it rained, some of them went up into a small tree and some went to the big tree. How many combinations could there be. We have been working hard on learning the "partners of 10" these past few weeks. I should have a solid understanding of the many different ways to make 10 using two numbers. Please practice this with me at home. You can say "5 and __???__ make 10?" and ask me to fill in the blank.

What is perseverance?

Here is our first 5 words from our new sight word list! This week's words are: do all under on at This is our poem of the week: This week we are talking all about perseverance. Our poem says "I think I can"! This is a positive mindset that we are trying learn to say to ourselves even when things are hard. We listened to a story called "How to catch a star" which is about a boy who loved stars and wished he could catch his own. We counted that he tried at least 5 different ways to catch a star and did not give up until one of his ways worked! We brained stormed what perseverance is and made a list. Then, we drew pictures of a time that we thought something was hard but had to persevere to accomplish it. We drew before and after pictures of what it looks and feels like to persevere! Some of us drew about learning how to ride a bike, swim, skate, climb monkey bars, and play hockey. REMINDERS: We seem to have a fruit fly problem ...

Curriculum Term Letter

Each grade team has created a Curriculum Term Letter to communicate with families about the learning that their child will be doing from September to December. The term plan specifies curricular outcomes that the grade will be focusing their instruction and assessment around. It is our hope that this letter will begin to provide you with a clear picture of your child’s learning over the year. You can find your child’s Curriculum Term Letter on our school website under Classes & Departments and the Resources on the right hand side of the page.   For further information on the Alberta Program of Studies, please visit the Learn Alberta website: https://www.learnalberta.ca/content/mychildslearning/ Housekeeping: **Tomorrow (Wednesdays) is our library day. Please help remind your child to put their library books into their backpacks.  We still need 5 more volunteers next Thursday October 17 from 9:45am-11:45am. Please click HERE to sign up.
