I'm a Little Groundhog

We will be doing a science experiment. Each of us will need to bring in 1 clean glass jar anytime before February 11. The glass jar needs to have a wide opening of about 3 inches or more and needs to be about 4 inches tall or more. Some jars that would work perfectly are: salsa jars and pickle jars. If you have more than one jar and would like to donate more that would be great. Please note that you will not be getting the jars back.

We also need pipe cleaners as well in any color. We will need at least 45 pipe cleaners.  If you have some and are willing to donate, that would be much appreciated. Please e-mail us if you are able to donate some. Thank you!

On February 2 it will be groundhog day. Ask me to tell you what it means if the groundhog sees his shadow. We learned that s and h make the "sh" sound. Ask me to tell you words that start with "sh". When I'm reading my home reading book with you and when you read stories to me, ask me to find these words as we read.

We read a book today called "If kids ruled the world". This really got our imaginations going! We did some writing about what we would do, if we ruled the world. We came up with some funny and big ideas. We are becoming more independent with our writing skills. We know that our writing should match our drawings and to add detail in our drawings and use at least 5 different colors.

In writing, we are working on using finger spaces between words, using punctuation (period, exclamation marks) at the end of a sentence and using an uppercase letter only at the beginning of a sentence. We are working on using "kid spelling" to write down the words we hear. Please help me practice these skills at home. You can ask me to write you a note to remind you to get milk from the grocery store. I can help you write the grocery list by sounding out the words and maybe drawing a simple picture beside my word to show you what I mean.

We are continuing our investigation of winter and taking a closer look at snow and snowflakes. Today we practiced drawing snowflakes. We learned that no two snowflakes are the same. Ask me to tell you what I know about snowflakes. I can tell you how they form and how many points all snowflakes have. We practiced drawing our own snowflakes.

Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me I'm the Gingerbread man!

We had a very exciting day full of surprises! This morning as we were learning our new poem about the gingerbread man, we discovered that our gingerbread people we made on Friday ran away!! They left us a note, and we went on a gingerbread man hunt around the school! Ask me where we had to look and where we finally found them! This afternoon we went up on stage and practiced our song for our concert this week! We are so excited to show you our Sugar Plum dance. This afternoon a package came for us! It was freezing cold and had snow on it! It came all the way from the North Pole! We opened it up and it was an Elf! We will learn what our Elf's name is tomorrow! Here is our new poem of the week and our new sight words: ran, ate, eat, he, no

What is perseverance?

Here is our first 5 words from our new sight word list! This week's words are: do all under on at This is our poem of the week: This week we are talking all about perseverance. Our poem says "I think I can"! This is a positive mindset that we are trying learn to say to ourselves even when things are hard. We listened to a story called "How to catch a star" which is about a boy who loved stars and wished he could catch his own. We counted that he tried at least 5 different ways to catch a star and did not give up until one of his ways worked! We brained stormed what perseverance is and made a list. Then, we drew pictures of a time that we thought something was hard but had to persevere to accomplish it. We drew before and after pictures of what it looks and feels like to persevere! Some of us drew about learning how to ride a bike, swim, skate, climb monkey bars, and play hockey. REMINDERS: We seem to have a fruit fly problem ...
