What is a resolution?

This week we have been talking about "resolutions". Some students were already familiar with the idea from "New Years Resolutions". We read a story called "Squirrel's New Years Resolution" and found out that a resolution is "a promise you make to yourself to better yourself, or to help others". We brainstormed somethings that we want to become better at in Grade 1, and today we did some reflective writing about our goals. Hopefully one day we can look back and say we accomplished our goals!

In writing, we are working to use finger spaces, use the word wall for spelling, use inventive spelling/kid spelling, draw a neat and detailed picture, create 2 or more sentences, and print our letters neatly and legibly.
Any practice at home with this helps! Students can practice printing a sentence about their day at school, their favourite animals, favourite sports, whatever they wish!

Scholastic book orders were sent home today. They are due by Thursday, January 16th.

Today we had another blue day. We are preparing for many more blue days! Thank you for helping your child to wear their warm clothes!

Reminder that students will need to bring in a stuffed animal for a math task for Monday. It will stay at school for a few days so please select one that they can be apart from for this time :)

What is perseverance?

Here is our first 5 words from our new sight word list! This week's words are: do all under on at This is our poem of the week: This week we are talking all about perseverance. Our poem says "I think I can"! This is a positive mindset that we are trying learn to say to ourselves even when things are hard. We listened to a story called "How to catch a star" which is about a boy who loved stars and wished he could catch his own. We counted that he tried at least 5 different ways to catch a star and did not give up until one of his ways worked! We brained stormed what perseverance is and made a list. Then, we drew pictures of a time that we thought something was hard but had to persevere to accomplish it. We drew before and after pictures of what it looks and feels like to persevere! Some of us drew about learning how to ride a bike, swim, skate, climb monkey bars, and play hockey. REMINDERS: We seem to have a fruit fly problem ...

The Pledge of Kindness

We have been introduced to all of the sight words on our second list! Please help me review these at home. I should know all of these sight words by Spring Break. At Student Led Conferences, we will be receiving our third and final sight word list of grade one. Here is the second list: The Grade 3 Students are going to be hosting the Pink Shirt Day Assembly! You are invited to join us   on February 26th at 2:00 pm   in the gym. We will be singing songs, reciting poetry and celebrating kindness! We hope to see you there and remember to wear your PINK Shirt that day! This week our poem is about kindness. Ask me to find some sight words I know in the poem.  We are learning about how we are part of a family, a school a community and the world! We looked at Google Earth today. You can check it out at googleearth.com. We travelled to Mrs. Ly’s house today and even to Paul’s pizza (one of our students family owns this restaurant). Today they ...
