Family

Today we talked about family. We read a book by Todd Parr called "The Family Book". It talks about how all families are different, and that all families care about each other. We drew a "family portrait" of our own families and then wrote about our families. We learned lots about some of you moms and dads too! We will be continuing to learn about families and how they are different and why they are important to us.

Our poem this week is called "Families". Here are our sight words of the week:
saw, they, four, our, wanted

In math today we learned a new game called "Connect Four". To play, you need to roll two dice and then add the dice together to find the total, or "sum". This is great practice for our addition skills and strategies.

100 days of school

We will be celebrating 100 days of school on Wednesday, February 19.
On this day, grade ones are going to have a “dress like you are 100 years old” day. Please do not buy anything new!
Here are some ideas:
Girls: a dress and cardigan, big jewelry, a hat, a scarf tied around head, hair in a bun, using baby power for white hair, a cane
Boys: button up shirt, plaid, a hat, suspenders, a bow or tie, baby powder for white hair, a cane, a stick
Here is an example:

Valentines Day:
Our Valentines Day celebration will be Wednesday, February 12. This is an early dismissal day.
If you would like to participate in handing out Valentines, we ask that your child only sign their own name on the Valentines to help handing them out run smoothly. If your child would like to give out Valentines to the whole double class, we have 44 students. If your child is handing out to only their own class, there are 21 students in Mrs. Ly's class, and 23 in Ms. Granger's class.

Science Experiment:
Thank you to those who have already brought in their jars for our science experiment! Each child will need to bring in 1 clean glass jar before February 11. The jar needs to have a wide opening of about 3 inches or more and needs to be about 4 inches tall or more. Some ideas are: salsa jars, tomato sauce jars, and pickle jars. If you have more than 1 jar and would like to donate more that would be great! Please note you will not be getting the jars back.

Thank you for all of the donations of pipe cleaners! We received more than enough and no longer need more :)

Upcoming Dates:
  • Winter Walk Day is on Wed.  Please bundle up –open the door and go for it! We hope to have special guests greeting our walkers and our lovely Council has organized warm beverages for participants. We will be participating in Winter Walk Day as a class. Please help your child be prepared for the weather.
  • The Family Dance is on Thursday Eve.

Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me I'm the Gingerbread man!

We had a very exciting day full of surprises! This morning as we were learning our new poem about the gingerbread man, we discovered that our gingerbread people we made on Friday ran away!! They left us a note, and we went on a gingerbread man hunt around the school! Ask me where we had to look and where we finally found them! This afternoon we went up on stage and practiced our song for our concert this week! We are so excited to show you our Sugar Plum dance. This afternoon a package came for us! It was freezing cold and had snow on it! It came all the way from the North Pole! We opened it up and it was an Elf! We will learn what our Elf's name is tomorrow! Here is our new poem of the week and our new sight words: ran, ate, eat, he, no

What is perseverance?

Here is our first 5 words from our new sight word list! This week's words are: do all under on at This is our poem of the week: This week we are talking all about perseverance. Our poem says "I think I can"! This is a positive mindset that we are trying learn to say to ourselves even when things are hard. We listened to a story called "How to catch a star" which is about a boy who loved stars and wished he could catch his own. We counted that he tried at least 5 different ways to catch a star and did not give up until one of his ways worked! We brained stormed what perseverance is and made a list. Then, we drew pictures of a time that we thought something was hard but had to persevere to accomplish it. We drew before and after pictures of what it looks and feels like to persevere! Some of us drew about learning how to ride a bike, swim, skate, climb monkey bars, and play hockey. REMINDERS: We seem to have a fruit fly problem ...
