Happy Spring Break!

It's hard to believe that spring break begins now. We will not be updating the blog during spring break but will continue to update it weekly like we always have been after the break. If you haven't already done so, please subscribe to our e-mail list so you can start receiving our updates straight to your inbox. Weekly updates have been sent from the school and it includes some great links. We may have more information for you after the break as well.

This past week would have been student led conferences. One of the tasks was a math task and problem solving.

Below is the link to the problem where your child would have showed you how they would solve this problem. We have been working a lot on how to solve math problems these past several months. Please find some time to have your child work through this problem independently using the organizer sheet provided in the link. This could give you an indication to where they are at with their math. We use these statements in class so students know what is expected:

- I can record my thoughts and ideas in a neat and organized way
- I can use pictures, numbers and or words to show how I solved the problem
- I can check my work (Did I clearly answer my problem?)

Your child can show you how they self assess their math work using the sheet provided in the link. We use the colors green (got it), yellow (working on it) and red (I'm stuck) to indicate where we think we are. You can be the teacher and assess their work as well using the teacher reflection column. If you do not have access to a printer, you can draw your own by copying our template. Please feel free to scan/take a photo of the sheet and e-mail it to us.

Math Problem

Our class has been diligently following the life cycle of our rainbow trout. We currently have 6 rainbow trout and they now have their very own blog. Mrs. Ly will continue to go into the school on a regular basis to care for our fish. She will feed them and clean their tank. We are hoping they will survive so we can release them in May.

Rainbow Trout Blog

Thank you for sending us videos and photos of what you have been doing, we LOVE seeing your faces. Please continue to send us your updates regularly. We would normally share photos from the week in our classroom so we thought it might be a neat idea to collect some photos of what you have been up to and share it on our blog regularly. All you need to do is simply say in your e-mail "yes please feel free to share this photo on the blog". We do have a list of families who have signed our media consent forms that were sent out at the beginning of the year so we can only post photos of those students only.

Here's what some of your friends are up to this week:
Someone got some beautiful new glasses!
Following directions by building lego step by step

"Today we did some water color painting and covered up the fridge with beautiful artwork"

"This was the other day we went to police man flats, one of our favourites in mild weather and also nice. Z was exploring with his brother and picking up sticks! We love love the outdoors!"
"We are doing science and we did an experiment today. This is the picture I drew of a flower."

"Then after following the steps of the experiment, we put it in the water and everything but the stem and bud disappeared!! It was SO cool!! My brother and I really liked doing that experiment and learning about how light bends through water:)

What is perseverance?

Here is our first 5 words from our new sight word list! This week's words are: do all under on at This is our poem of the week: This week we are talking all about perseverance. Our poem says "I think I can"! This is a positive mindset that we are trying learn to say to ourselves even when things are hard. We listened to a story called "How to catch a star" which is about a boy who loved stars and wished he could catch his own. We counted that he tried at least 5 different ways to catch a star and did not give up until one of his ways worked! We brained stormed what perseverance is and made a list. Then, we drew pictures of a time that we thought something was hard but had to persevere to accomplish it. We drew before and after pictures of what it looks and feels like to persevere! Some of us drew about learning how to ride a bike, swim, skate, climb monkey bars, and play hockey. REMINDERS: We seem to have a fruit fly problem ...

Little Elf

It is the final week before the Winter Break. Wow! We have been counting the days and today is day 69. That means we have been in grade one for 69 days of learning, fun and growing.  This week, our new sight words are: who went what  but  so Our poem is: Our teachers are very proud of us and all the work we have been doing around our reading skills. We have been really good sight word detectives and finding them hidden in other words.  Please click on the poem above and ask me to find the sight words this wee: but, so, went. I am also using the strategy Eagle Eye (looking at pictures for clues) to decode words. Ask me to tell you which word says "Christmas Tree, Reindeer, Santa, Candy Cane." We enjoyed some Festive Singing in the gym today and are working on a story map for the story "The Gingerbread Man". Today we learned what the word characters mean. There are 7 characters in the story we listened to today. Ask me to tell yo...
