Signs of Winter

**Report Cards are now online and available through PowerSchool. Please review the report card with your child and celebrate all the learning they are doing and the areas they can work on.  There is no school tomorrow Friday January 31. Here are the highlights from our week: - A visit from our Occupational Therapist Ms. Christine. She worked with our class on our printing skills and reminded us that we always start letters at the top and showed just what mission position looks like when we are writing. - Learning about Groundhog Day. Ask me to tell you if I think the groundhog will see his shadow and what that means - Our rainbow trout are now alevin! Ask me to tell you what that means, what do the alevin look like and what is happening to them at this stage. - Looking for signs of winter at the pond. We were excited to learn that last week, a coyote was spotted! We actually spotted a snowshoe hare on our walk! - Investigating the story of snow and snowflakes - What do pe

I'm a Little Groundhog

We will be doing a science experiment. Each of us will need to bring in 1 clean glass jar anytime before February 11. The glass jar needs to have a wide opening of about 3 inches or more and needs to be about 4 inches tall or more. Some jars that would work perfectly are:  salsa jars and pickle jars. If you have more than one jar and would like to donate more that would be great. Please note that you will not be getting the jars back.  We also need pipe cleaners as well in any color. We will need at least 45 pipe cleaners.  If you have some and are willing to donate, that would be much appreciated. Please e-mail us if you are able to donate some. Thank you!  *There is no school this Friday *Wednesday is Home Reading and Library Book Exchange Our new sight words this week are: was soon she  into  yes On February 2 it will be groundhog day. Ask me to tell you what it means if the groundhog sees his shadow. We learned that s and h make the "sh" so

Chinese New Year Celebrations

This week has been so fun learning about the Chinese culture and traditions. We read a story called "The Great Race" that taught us why each year is represented by a different animal. The story goes that a Chinese Emperor had a race and invited all the animals to take part. Twelve animals turned up at the race: a pig, dog, rooster, monkey, sheep, horse, snake, dragon, rabbit, tiger ox and rat. Ask your child to tell you what happened in the race and who won! We learned about our own Chinese Zodiac's and how they are special. In our classroom we have horses, snakes, and dragons! Ask your child what their zodiac animal tells about them. Yesterday we were getting ready for Chinese New Year by cleaning our classroom. Cleaning is tradition to say goodbye to the old year, and make room for the new year. We had cleaning jobs and worked together. We cleaned chairs, desks, walls, checked markers, wiped white boards, sorted our math bins, organized centres, and swept! Today

Rainbow Trout

Copperfield School received 65 rainbow trout eggs from the Bow Habitat Station. We are learning all about the stages of life the eggs will develop through, what they need to survive, and very cool rainbow trout facts! (like rainbow trout can have 3000 eggs!) Ask me to tell you somethings I know about the rainbow trout eggs.  Today we read a story called "Memoirs of a goldfish". It reminded us of the fish tank in the learning commons where the eggs are living! We started our own "memoirs of a rainbow trout" books and are writing from the perspective of the eggs.  Some wrote:  I see bubbles. I see students. I hear noises. I hear kids. I smell kid's lunches.  Here are some pictures of the tank and the eggs.

Gung Hay Fat Choi!

Gung Hay Fat Choi! Ask me what this means! It is "Happy New Year" in Chinese. This week is Chinese New Year, and Mrs. Ly is teaching us all about the holiday and celebrations. Today we read a song called Gung Hay Fat Choi, and learned that sweeping, oranges, apples, the colour red, fire works, and dragons are all important traditions during Chinese New Year. Ask me to tell you why! Here is the song, and the sight words we are learning this week: good, with, now, too, get We also looked for the diagraph "ch" and the sound "oo"in our song. Here is a version of the song to sing at home! Gung Hay Fat Choy This week will be learning something new each day about Chinese New Year. We can't wait to share with you what we will learn. Today we started an art page in our visual journals for Chinese New Year. We used the colours red for good luck with gold and glitter to represent gold and good fortune.

Measuring My Stuffy

I can tell you all about how I measured my stuffie. We learned some new math vocabulary. We talked about what it means to measure height (how tall), and width (how wide). We also measured the circumference (around). I learned that we can measure something using objects. I can show you how to measure objects at home using blocks, or spoons etc. We also compared the measurements of our stuffie with each other. I used words such as "shorter than" and "taller than" to describe my measurement.  On Friday January 24 @ 9:30am, Copperfield School will be celebrating Chinese New Years. Kindergarten will be hosting our assembly along with a Martial Arts and Lion Dance Presentation by students from The Calgary Tai Chi & Martial Arts College. Please wear  RED   for good luck on Friday.
