Orange Shirt Day

Monday, September 30 th  is Orange Shirt Day. This day began in 2013 when residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad shared how her orange shirt was taken away on her first day at residential school.  On this day, we have the opportunity to commit to commemorating the children who attended residential schools, recognizing their experiences, honoring them and sharing a collective commitment to ensure that every child matters and that each student is welcome, safe, respected and cared for in their learning community every day.  Here is the website if you would like more information:  http://www.orangeshirtday.org/ We encourage Copperfield students to wear either an orange shirt or their favorite shirt on Monday, September 30 th  as we take part in Orange Shirt Day.

The Terry Fox Run

Wow! All of the students did amazing at the Terry Fox Run. We ran around the pond once. Thank you to all of the parents who came out to cheer us on. We thought about how Terry ran and how he never gave up. We challenged ourselves to not stop and walk if we were tired. As a class, we raised $104.95 for Terry! That is so amazing. Thank you for all of your contributions. Our class has been so excited about learning who Terry Fox is this week. Here are some of our highlights this week. Our creation of Terry Fox's journey. Parents are welcome to come cheer us on! Look for the Canadian Flag, that is where our class will be meeting. Our class has collected $32.95! I can still bring in a toonie tomorrow if I haven't yet. Rainbow Snack This week we learned about rainbow snacks. Ask me to tell you what they are. We learned that rainbow snacks give us energy and fuels our body so we can learn at our best. We learned that rainbow snacks are things like celery, carrots, grapes, blueberries, watermelon etc. They are fruits and vegetables. We looked at some rainbow snacks and sorted them into colors. We learned that yogurt, fruit roll up, fruit juice and goldfish crackers are not rainbow snacks. We will be tracking our rainbow snacks each day and our goal is to have everyone have rainbow snacks in their lunch kits. At school, I am as

Who is Terry?

Please practice our new poem this week. It goes to the tune of "are you sleeping?" Our new sight words this week are: I help we me run Today we talked about who Terry Fox is. Ask me to tell you some of the things I know about him. We learned that he is a Canadian Hero. We talked about how he has raised millions of dollars for cancer. You can watch the video we saw today by clicking  HERE We did some art in our visual journals to represent Terry Fox. Ask me to tell you what I did with my shoe!  As a whole class, we decided to build the path that Terry Fox took. It was so amazing to see all of the students come together and connect their learning in this way. We are going to continuously build on it this week. We have the starting point where he started in Newfoundland and the end point where he stopped running. Can you spot Terry Fox? Buddies

**We would like every child to bring a rock with a relatively flat surface to school next week. You can find one this weekend while you are taking a walk, or maybe you find one in your backyard. The rock should be no bigger than the size of an adult palm. Please have your child bring their rock in by Thursday next week. We completed our first full week of grade one, hooray! We continue to learn our classroom routines and get to know our classmates. We have been practicing our reading skills. We have been working on reading the pictures and decode some words by using the pictures for clue. We call this skill "Eagle Eye". Please help me practice this at home. We each have a grade 3 buddy! They are from Mr. Soulliere and Ms. Reilly's class. It was so exciting to meet them today. We read with our buddies today and got to know them. We will be connecting with them every week.
